In my journey toward self-publishing my first novel, I've come across multiple authors who have 50-100+ titles to their name. I can't imagine how this is possible. And it's not just about working hard; I couldn't have possibly worked harder in completing my book. I wonder how these writers get so much done at such a rapid pace. If I were to start publishing multiple books a year, the work would absolutely suffer. Yet there are some who write more in an hour than I can get out in a day.
It reminds me of this quote by New Yorker journalist A.J. Liebling - "I can write better than anybody who can write faster, and I can write faster than anybody who can write better." I think of a book like a tapestry. There are many different layers, and while some company cranking out shoddy product may end up with a bigger return, there are some aspects of a hand-crafted piece that can never be duplicated by mechanical means. I'd like to be able to write faster, but not at the cost of the story. So, what I've resolved to do is to write as fast as I can write well, and no faster, because some things are worth the time.
